VTURCS Spring Symposium

The annual VTURCS Research Symposium takes place each year in late spring. The symposium provides students with the opportunity to present their work to their peers and professors to get valuable feedback from a diverse audience. Participants submit a short abstract and create a poster describing their work. Attendees of the symposium select People's Choice Award winners. In addition, a team of distinguished faculty select the Faculty's Choice Award winners. In 2003 we started the Industry Choice awards (now known as the Marston Award thanks to a generous gift from the Marston family) in which representatives from industry select the projects most likely to have an impact on industry. And in 2013 we added the Capstone Award for the best poster resulting from a senior capstone project. VTURCS presenters may want to keep in mind which award(s) they want to target as they prepare and plan their posters, abstracts, and participant interactions!

Preparing your abstract

To prepare your abstract for the VTURCS Spring Symposium, we ask that you follow these steps.

  1. Your abstract will be printed in a booklet that will be made available to all in attendance, including faculty, industry representatives, and other distinguished guests. Make sure you take care in writing it.
  2. You can see some sample abstracts from previous years symposia, e.g., here. The abstract can be up to 400 words long, should not include references or images, and should be submitted via plain text per the submission instructions.
  3. Verify your abstract is adequate and representative of your work by discussing it with your project advisor and others that have been collaborating with you.
  4. Once the abstract AND poster are ready, submit it using the Submit Abstracts link.

Preparing your poster

To produce your poster for the VTURCS Spring Symposium, we recommend that you follow the following steps.

  1. Prepare your poster according to these guidelines.
  2. Polish your poster by discussing it with your advisor and other students that have been collaborating or interacting with you.
  3. Once the poster is ready, upload it to your Google Drive or Dropbox account. You will include a link to the file in the abstract submission form.
  4. Make sure you have tested that the URL is publicly accessible so we can print your poster. If you do not need your poster printed (e.g., if it was printed previously for another event) please indicate so in the submission form.
  5. Your poster will be delivered to the symposium site 45 minutes before the start of the symposium. If you need to pick it up early, indicate so on the submission form. There will be materials to mount your poster, but you will need to mount it yourself.
